An art master in Quebec City
Claude A. Simard was born in the beautiful city of Quebec on July 9, 1943. He studied at Quebec High School and at the Académie de Québec before pursuing his passion for the arts at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto from 1962 to 1966.
After graduating, he completed an internship with the design group of British Motors Corporation in Birmingham, England. Upon returning to his hometown, he began his career working for another landmark of Quebec City, at the Simons group, where he was hired as Director of Advertising and Development from 1966 to 1973. In fact, Simons’ branding we know today is Claude A. Simard’s work!
Like Daniel Gagné and Hugo Landry, the future painter founded his own graphic design firm in 1973, which he directed until 1984 and with which he received various distinctions. Received in 1981 at the Royal Academy of Arts of Canada, he taught at the School of Visual Arts at Laval University from 1982 to 2002. In addition, he became Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Planning, Architecture , Art and design in 1988-1989.
A multi-faceted talent
Claude A. Simard’s paintings were the sole subject of art exhibitions from 1975. In 1991, he was invited to participate in an exhibition showcasing Quebec painters in Paris. The Canada Post Corporation asked for him to create eight postage stamps, including a commemorative stamp, Quebec in Bloom, issued in 1997.
The artist has also published several books devoted to his two passions, painting and gardening, including Inspiration, a book dedicated to his grandchildren “so that they would keep in memory all the pleasure we have together at this old easel ». Actually, his books Inspiration and Garden Passion are both available at the Perreault Gallery for $35 each!
Claude A. Simard will be forever remembered for his colorful painting depicting scenes of floral gardens, landscapes, still lifes and characters. Take a look at the beautiful artwork available in our Gallery by clicking here!
