Corno studied at the University of Quebec in Montreal where she obtained a BA in Fine Art turning to a full time painting career in her early 20s. Her first representation was at the Clarence Gagnon Gallery in Montreal.
Corno has had a long and illustrious career that began in the 1980s when she became the darling of Canadian collectors after exploding onto the art scene and taking it by storm with a her full-fledged post-pop idiom that has been her signature style ever since and has in fact blossomed into an art movement influencing several generations of artists.
Corno’s early success propelled her to the international stage and broader recognition. New York City, an irresistible magnet for her, became her spring board to capitals of the world such as New York, London, Paris, Venice, Monaco, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul and Dubai through her represention by Opera Gallery.
Today, her international success is enviable. With spirited dichotomies, she flamboyantly combines meticulous figurative details and explosive gestural movements that have a bold contemporary resonance. Her colors are brilliant and frank giving additional bounce to her intense textures and generous brush strokes that tickle the eye and awaken the senses.
Corno’s exhibitions have maintained a steady pace for over 35 years during which time she has had little respite going from one high point to another. Her work has reached a level of maturity and assurance that continues to attract new audiences and collectors. With so much wind in her sails, she has also taken the bold step of representing herself with great success at AKA Gallery in Montreal which could lead to further developments of this kind throughout the world.
In 2015, she painted male nudes in front of 300 people at a memorable event at AKA Gallery Corno Live Painting. Sexy, provocative, and hot, the evening was a fundraiser for the Maisonneuve Rosemont Hospital Foundation and a resounding success. The celebrity turn-out was all glitz and glam, and the media blitz frantic.
Same year, from December 4 until the end of the month, Corno exhibited a collection of spectacular paintings and prints at the Markowicz Fine Art Gallery in Miami. Fifteen paintings, swirling with colors and infused with deep emotions, reveal Corno`s ever-growing radiance. These extraordinary
works can only be driven by the artist`s explosive creative energy. With several works sold even before the opening, the event proved to be a huge success in the midst of Art Basel festivities.
In 2014, she conjured up Creative Chaos, a dynamic exhibition at the prestigious The Quin Hotel in New York. Despite its title, it was not chaos that was unleashed but a breath of fresh air that swept everything in its path and won the favor of a new audience.
2013 was notable for several major events. Corno presented her Infra Series at AKA Gallery where she proved once more that her love of the human face, infrared/ultraviolet colors and female beauty is shared by many. As the special guest of Une heure sur terre at Radio-Canada she morphed into a hip guide for an eclectic tour of some of New York’s best attractions. She also presented Blondes Have More Fun Opera Gallery New York where she proved the truth of the saying.
2013 was also the year that the documentary film Corno directed by Guy Édoin premiered at FIFA (International Festival of Films on Art) and won the Audience Award. Then Opera Gallery Dubai organized A Piece of Canada in collaboration with the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates and the Consulate General of the UAE. The exhibition brought together three exceptional artists who reflected the diversity, passion, experience and energy of modern Canadian art while celebrating the growing cultural links between Canada and the UAE. His Excellency M. Arif Lalani, Ambassador of Canada to the United Arab Emirates was in attendance.
In 2012, Opera Gallery Dubai presented an exhibition and Corno had an exclusive Open House for the trendy Opera Gallery New York collectors. She also participated for a second time at the Toronto Luminato Festival where she exhibited huge diptychs. But the real highlight was her collaboration with Lancôme on the creation of a new line of products based on one of her mural paintings. Her hot bright pink lipstick flew off the shelves of select stores in just a few hours.
In 2011, Corno participated in the Céline for the Children event, a fundraiser at the Club de Golf Le Mirage, organized by Céline Dion and René Angélil. Corno’s painting sold at a record price and the evening ended on a high note with a private performance by Céline Dion. Later that year, Corno was in Los Angeles for Québec in Hollywood featuring Quebec artists of all kinds, including the Cirque du Soleil which premiered Iris. The Marilyn Monroe collection was exhibited at the David Lawrence Gallery and the famous Roosevelt Hotel.
The Minister of Culture Christine St-Pierre representing the Quebec government was also present in support of the artists and cultural businesses participating in this unique showcase. “Québec in Hollywood is a special opportunity to publicize the work of some of our best artists,” said the Minister. Meanwhile exhibitions continued at full tilt at the Opera Galleries of Paris, London, Hong Kong and Singapore.
In 2010 Corno had an exhibition in Hong Kong entitled In the Mood for Art where she first unveiled the Marilyn Monroe collection. She attended the International Design Fair of Montréal – SIDIM – participating in a fundraising event for the Haiti earthquake survivors. As usual, her work of art collected the most funds. 2010 was also the year she painted rock singer and superstar Éric Lapointe for the cover of Le Ciel de mes combats. But the biggest surprise was the publication of Cornographie, Corno’s autobiographical account published at the Éditions La Presse. Her anecdotes were witty and amusing, and her writing style proved to be as colorful as her paintings. The year ended on a high note with a cocktail at AKA Gallery now located in Old Montréal, as well as a solo exhibition at Opera Gallery New York simply entitled Corno.
2009 was no less busy. With a constantly growing demand for her work, Corno had two joint exhibitions in Singapore – Corno & AliEsmaeilipour – and Dubai – Corno & Wang Yehan. But the highlight of the year was unquestionably her participation in the Montreal International Jazz Festival as guest artist for the Festival’s 30th anniversary celebration. The Festival commissioned Face for Jazz which was unveiled at their new Gallery. AKA Gallery had an opening in tandem with these events and later in the year when Corno unveiled a new palette of colors full of subtleties and nuances. The event caught the attention of CTV’s eTalk hosted by Ben Mulroney. Thompson Landry Gallery in Toronto celebrated its 10th anniversary by featuring the artwork of Corno and Opera Gallery London showed her work too. Viewers of the legendary talk show Tout le monde en parle on CBC Radio-Canada got to see a high-powered interview of Corno with the irreverant Guy A. Lepage.
These exhibitions followed a remarkable series in 2008. First she exhibited at Opera Gallery Hong Kong with unprecedented success. Then it was Paris with Corno and Moz followed closely by a group exhibition MADE IN NY where her works were juxtaposed with those of the American masters that influenced her. Then, AKA Gallery in Montreal unrolled the red carpet and she was celebrated at Roc-Roussey & Corno, an exhibition at Opera Gallery New York.
This international ascent had happened in rapid incremental steps. In 2007, Corno was the guest of honour at the Fido Spot in Toronto where her works were projected on the largest outdoor digital screen in Canada. Prior to that, her works were the focus of the Luminato Festival of Arts and Creativity of Toronto in addition to being shown at the Thompson Landry Gallery.
2006 was a turning point when AKA Gallery opened in Montreal and began representing Corno’s works exclusively in Quebec. The event made the evenings news on most of the major networks. Early in the year, she had been the guest artist of the Cirque du Soleil for the premiere of Alegría at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. She also exhibited at Opera Gallery London and Hong Kong, and Left Coast Gallery in Los Angeles where here works had the effect of a sonic boom.
Highlights in 2005: an interview by filmmaker Bernar Hébert, recipient of an Emmy Award for his film The Art of the Nude which premired at the International Festival of Films on Art, then broadcast on Bravo!, ART-TV, France 5 and Radio-Canada. Prior to this, the Massive Media Techno-Graffiti event in Columbus Circle and Union Square in New York had projected Corno’s art on entire buildings facades. Corno was also the guest artist for The Train New York Paris, an international art and fashion event that attracted designers, museum curators, diplomats and celebrities, where she created a spectacular 14 meter mural, the longest mural she has ever created.
The international list of museums, corporations and public and private collections continues to grow on several continents. Corno appeared in MORE Magazine’s 40 over 40 – women whom they deemed the most remarkable women in Canada. Chatelaine included her in their 100 Club – 100 women who best represent Quebec. After much hard work and perseverance, Corno is in an enviable position. This is why she encourages young artists to do like her, to follow their dream because sometimes dreams really do come true.
