New artist at the Gallery coming soon: Bao Pham
The Perreault Gallery will soon welcome a new artist! We already offer several works by Mr. Brainwash, a pop art artist recognized worldwide (click here to see his work!) The pop art trend being in great demand, we are now also pleased to represent Bao Pham, the “Montreal Banksy”!
A dentist turned painter
Born in Vietnam in 1975 during the war, Bao Pham immigrated to Canada and arrived in Montreal in 1982 at the age of seven. A self-taught artist, he has been drawing since his childhood. His passion for the visual arts however progressed towards 1995 with the discovery of a typical art form of the big cities: the graffiti! The future painter decorated the walls of Montreal and Quebec with his can of paint until 2002, when he finished his studies and obtained a doctorate in dentistry at the University of Montreal.
Later on, Bao Pham opened its own dental clinic on St-Denis Street in Montreal, which is now a little over 15 years old. In the back of his office where he practices dentistry is a workshop, where he can go paint between two patients!
Quebec-style pop art
“I like to use a character, an item or an image that has marked the imagination of people to create a unique universe in my paintings” confided the artist to the Journal de Quebec. Inspired enormously by popular culture, Bao Pham mixes techniques and mediums to accurately create his vision. He works with painting, collage, watercolor, acrylic, oil sticks – and sometimes with paint cans still! “My favorite medium is acrylic paint because the fact that it dries quickly allows me to add layer several layers of different colors in a short time to create depth in my works.”
Bao Pham is inspired by different artistic trends in his works: pop culture, of course, but also urban art, manga and Art Nouveau. No wonder his style is so unique!
